The top boy and girl names for 2016 have been announced by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Queensland. The winning names are, drumroll, Charlotte and Oliver!
There has been a clear shift in the top 10 baby names in Queensland between 2015 and 2016. Mia, Isla and Evelyn have emerged as popular girl names, along with Charlie, Hunter, Lachlan and Mason for the boys. However; the number one most popular name had not changed for either gender from 2015 to 2016. Charlotte was the most popular name for baby girls in Queensland in 2016, which was the same in 2015. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, born in 2015, is possibly a reason for the continued popularity. Oliver was the most popular name for boys in 2016; ditto in 2015.
Interestingly, the top three boys’ names haven’t changed since 2015, with William in second place and Jack in third. Four new boy names emerged on the 2016’s top 10 list, including Hunter, Lachlan, Mason and Charlie.
In 2015, Mia was the fifth most popular baby name for girls. In 2016, Mia moved up the list to second place. Isla and Evelyn were also new top contenders in 2016 as these names were not on the 2015 top 10 list.
As current affairs and the world changes pace, what girl and boy names will be most popular for 2017?
Will Donald make an appearance on the official registry of births? My pick is Elle, Sienna or Kate will make the top 10 girls’ name. Only time will tell.
